How it all began...

Let me take you back, to Horton in Ribblesdale, early in January 2008. Two blokes, fresh from tramping through the snow up on the peaks, were sat in front of the log fire, drying off and enjoying a nice pint.

After an hour or so, our jaws had all about unfrozen, the booze was beginning to have an effect and in a flash of inspiration, Rob, shouted out loud, “Lets walk Hadrian’s Wall!” This rash obscenity descended into chaos, with the dog, waking up and lumbering itself in front of the fire, displacing the heat, with that the landlady, who was wondering how long we were making one pint last, decided to shut the pub and force us out into temperatures more related to the Siberian steppe.

The plan was born. All that was left, was to convince me and maybe Simon, to come along. Which duly happened after a few months and a fair few drinks.

So, here we are. Sat in Siberian temperatures again, typing up the introduction to the blog.

On 22nd June, 2009, we shall depart Wallsend, and hope to take in Heddon on the Hill, Walwick, Greenhead, Eden Groove, and Bowness on Solway, over 5 days. A total of 84 miles at an average of 17miles a day. Not that difficult you harden walkers say? I haven’t mentioned that we are planning on doing this in Roman Legionaries outfits? Ha, that’ll make a little more difficult.

Of course, we wouldn’t put ourselves through this for any reason! So, we have decided to raise money for a good cause. The charity we have chosen to be our benefactors is Martin House, which in 1987 became only the 2nd Children’s Hospice in the UK. For more information on the excellent service Martin House provides to children and young adults, please visit www.martinhouse.org.uk.

We hope you will follow our blog, right through our training walks and if you would like to donate to our cause, please follow the link on the site. This will re-direct you to our donation page www.justgiving.com/hadrianswallwalk09 where you can click on the ‘sponsor us now’ button and make a donation.
